Overview Annabel has extensive experience of acting for the defence in a wide range of serious and complex criminal trials and appeals. Annabel has particular expertise in cases involving political protest. In 2011 she was junior counsel for 9 of the 10 defendants in the first trial of the Fortnum and Mason protests during the TUC march against the cuts. This case is currently on appeal to the High Court. Annabel is instructed as junior counsel in the next two multi-handed trials arising out of the same protest due to be tried in March 2012. Annabel also represented the late Brian Haw in relation to prosecutions under SOCPA Annabel is often instructed to represent young and vulnerable clients. She recently acted for a child charged with sexual offences against an 11 year old girl. The defendant had an IQ of 49 and the proceedings were eventually stayed. Annabel also accepts instructions in cases involving financial crime. She has extensive experience representing foreign nationals prosecuted under the Fraud Act 2006 for false identification documents. She also acts in POCA proceedings. In tandem with her trial work Annabel has a growing appellant practice. She regularly advises on appeals in capital cases both in the US and to the Privy Council. She was recently led by Geoffrey Robertson QC in the Court of Appeal in the case of Victor Mears, the owner of the Lapland theme park prosecuted under the Consumer Protection from Trading Standards Regulations 2008. The conviction was quashed on the grounds of apparent juror bias [R v Mears [2011] EWCA Crim 2651]. Annabel is a contributing author to the forthcoming Lexis Practice notes on Appeals to the Supreme Court. Annabel also regularly acts for serving prisoners in adjudications and parole board hearings and advises on judicial review of parole board decisions. She is also instructed by the armed forces to represent soldiers facing courts martial. Before coming to the Bar Annabel worked on capital murder trials in Mississippi. She is Chair of the Amicus executive committee, a charity that trains and sends lawyers and students to the US to work on capital cases.
