 Jeannie Mackie

Jeannie Mackie specialises in criminal defence work with a particular interest in civil liberties, mentally disordered offenders and medico-legal issues. As a solicitor her practice included the mass defence of large scale political demonstrations, Children Act public law cases, as well as serious crime. After a further 6 years as a solicitor-advocate she transferred to the Bar. She has extensive experience of trial work at every level including appellate, as sole counsel, junior and leading junior. Recent cases have included a multi-handed conspiracy to commit violent disorder, child neglect arising from SIDS, and appellate work on diminished responsibility in murder. The co-author of Parents and the Law (Penguin Books, 1991) she is presently writing a book on mentally disordered offenders commissioned by LAG. She lectures on the law relating to mental disorder, contributes regularly to Solicitors' Journal and Butterworths Human Rights Direct, and provides written submissions to Liberty on civil liberties issues, including anonymity in rape and police procedures and PACE codes. She is, whilst in full time practice, presently doing a Diploma in Forensic Science involving a dissertation on sudden infant cot death.
