Dr Tunde Okewale OBE

Dr. Tunde Okewale OBE is a leading junior Barrister at the Criminal Bar. An outstanding advocate, he has exceptional presence and skill in front of a jury.

Tunde established his practice in general and serious crime. A string of serious and high profile cases have earned him a reputation as meticulous and diligent.

Tunde regularly undertakes appellate work in the Court of Appeal and the Administrative Court. In a case, the first of its kind, Tunde set a precedent by working with a University Pro Bono Society who referred the case of Dwaine George to the Court of Appeal. Tunde successfully overturned his wrongful conviction.

Tunde is heavily sought after in areas of business and financial crime. He has advised a number of high profile individuals as well as companies in relation to money laundering and anti corruption regulations.

His practice varies and sees him undertaking work in an array of fields. From advising crypto currency company, Stratis Platform, and the creation of alternative hedge funds, to appearing before sporting and professional regulatory tribunals.

Tunde is an FA registered intermediary who is building a reputation on advising and representing footballers, boxers and Olympic athletes. His most recent clients include Christopher George, four-time defending national Judo champion of Trinidad and Tobago and Ekow Essuman former Team GB welterweight and undefeated professional boxer. He advises athletes and clubs in relation to brand management, contractual matters, confidentiality and reputation management.

His flourishing practice and talents have been recognized by his professional peers when he was awarded the Young Barrister of the Year award and was a finalist for the “Young Legal Aid Barrister of the Year” award.

Tunde was a contributor to the report on ‘The Citizen’s Inquiry into the Tottenham Riot’. This report influenced national policy and helped secure funding for the residents of Tottenham.

Tunde featured as an expert on the BBC Radio 1 Xtra broadcast "GANGS ON FILM" alongside Noel Clarke, Ashley Walters and among others. He was asked to share his opinion on why young people join gangs and become entrenched in crime.

Tunde was selected to represent UK at an international conferences with China looking at social entrepreneurship and community cohesion (Sponsored by Cisco systems).

Tunde was involved in the Griffiths Trust 'Hush The Guns' Project in Kingston Jamaica in 2009, and was also commissioned by the Jamaican and Canadian Government to facilitate workshops for disaffected youths. Tunde was also the host for the BBC London youth debate, 'London speaks' in aid of the 1,000 days till the 2012 Olympics, and a debate for the Para Olympics in December 2009.

Tunde has substantial public speaking experience and regularly attends engagements for charitable bodies. In his spare time Tunde is heavily involved in community work. Tunde is at present working on a new project called Urban Lawyers, which has been awarded funding and is being supported by Hogan Lovells pro bono unit. Tunde is also President and Founder of Information Generation a social enterprise that provides information for disaffected communities. The organisation recently awarded 4 scholarships in partnership with BPP Law School.

Tunde was part of a delegation sent out by the Bar Human Rights Committee in partnership with UNICEF in Nigeria. The project aims to enhance the capacity of the Child Protection Network (CPN) set up across different states in Nigeria. This is achieved though conducting human rights monitoring and documentation, with a particular focus on case management, interviewing and taking statements from children. The project also works by engaging regional and international mechanisms of redress. Tunde delivered training on the aforesaid issues to legal practitioners, social workers and government ministers.
