Sally Hatfield

Sally Hatfield has a civil law practice with a specialism in medical law, medical issues and professional negligence:

• Clinical negligence and personal injury civil litigation: she works extensively in this field, predominantly on behalf of Claimants, her practice focussing on the more gravely injured patient or the more complex medical situation. She has advised on public law and human rights issues in cases involving provision of services and the ambit of public inquiry redress for the victims of large-scale medical malpractice. She also undertakes regulatory work in the General Medical Council.
• Mental Health litigation: psychiatric issues arise across the board of Sally's practice, covering allegations of psychiatric or psychotherapeutic negligence, local authority liability for abuse, the psychiatric ramifications of abuse and negligence, psychiatry within the prison estate.
• Coronial law: Sally has considerable inquest experience, particularly involving deaths raising medical issues, arising in the community or in custody.
• Prison litigation: assault and personal injury negligence claims
• Education litigation: Sally undertakes claims for damages by former pupils alleging negligence with regard to the identification and management of specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia and dyspraxia

Sally was appointed as a Recorder in 2004. She is co-author, with Aswini Weereratne, Ulele Burnham and Alison Gerry, of Butterworths New Law Guide to the Mental Capacity Act 2005 (publication April 2008). She has an interest in training, and is involved in its provision both legally and medically - to legal and healthcare professionals on the on the ambit and procedures of civil, medical and human rights law in the medical field. She is a member of an NHS Trust research ethics committee.
