 Sue Sleeman

Before coming to the Bar, Sue worked for several years in local government, primarily in a public relations role, during which time she became very active in and committed to the trade union movement. She later became a full-time trade union officer, working initially for the National Union of Teachers where she advised members and lay representatives on a wide range of employment issues then for the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, a combined trade union and professional body. As the CSP's Legal Officer Sue was responsible for advising and training other full time officers and lay representatives on employment law developments and drafting the union's responses to proposals for new legislation as well as representing members in Employment Tribunals and at professional disciplinary hearings.

Since coming to the Bar, Sue has continued to maintain strong links with the trade union movement. She has developed a significant employment law practice, primarily representing trade union supported claimants at Tribunal level, though she has also appeared in the EAT and in the High Court. Sue regularly represents members of a large number of national trade unions, including UNISON, UNITE, RMT and PCS, and has been successful in cases covering a wide range of issues such as race, sex and disability discrimination, contract claims and unfair dismissal. In 2008 Sue represented members of Community trade union who had been made redundant by their former employer, Alpha Steel Ltd, and was successful in securing compensation in excess of £1m.

Sue also practises extensively in the field of regulatory law, particularly professional disciplinary proceedings and regularly represents professionals such as physiotherapists, occupational therapists, paramedics, pharmacists, nurses and midwives, appearing before panels of the Health Professions Council, the Nursing and Midwifery Council, the Royal Pharmaceutical Society and, increasingly, the General Teaching Council. Sue has also represented clients at the First Tier Tribunal (formerly the Care Standards Tribunal).

Sue is now in the process of establishing a practice in the field of personal injury and clinical negligence.
