The Professional Discipline and Regulation team at Doughty Street Chambers covers all areas of professional discipline and regulatory work.
However, we are particularly well regarded for our expertise in:
Our practice is focussed on acting for individuals and registrants. This derives from chambers’ core ethos as a civil liberties and human rights set. Chambers and Partners 2012 describes Doughty Street as “overflowing with barristers who are ‘class acts’” and notes that our “dedicated members will not hesitate to ‘go the extra mile’” for our clients.
Our professional discipline work is no exception, and we fight the corner of individual registrants in cases at all levels.
As a team we have experience of representing professionals from all disciplines including doctors, nurses, midwives, health visitors, dentists, psychologists, psychiatrists, paramedics, social workers, vets, lawyers, legal executives, teachers, jockeys and journalists.
Team members are regarded as unafraid to raise novel or contentious points where it is in the interests of the client to do so. A number of members are public access qualified. Team members are also available for advisory work at any stage in the proceedings including, (but not limited to) issues relating to pre and post-charge, judicial review and appeal.
Many of our members benefit from practising in other relevant areas such as criminal defence, personal injury, employment law and administrative and public law.
The team regularly write articles and books on professional discipline. A book written by the team Professional Discipline and Health Care Regulators – A Legal Handbook was published by LAG in August 2012.
Our team also includes a GMC Legal Assessor.
Public Access enables you to save money by not also having to engage a solicitor, allows you to approach a specific barrister of your choice who is licensed to undertake Public Access instructions, and can improve the service level you receive in terms of communication, by not having to go through a third party on each occasion.
Doughty Street Chambers are committed to an undisputed reputation for excellence, providing a service that is efficient, responsive and accessible.
Public Access allows our licensed barristers to undertake the following directly:
Our barristers cannot however:
Each of our barristers must strictly adhere to the Bar Code of Conduct and as such, if in reviewing your case the barrister considers that a solicitor should be instructed in your own interests or for another professional reason, the barrister will advise you of this and will no longer be able to act for you other than on the instructions of a solicitor. Should this situation arise, the barrister will advise you of it as soon as possible. This may also be the case in the event that your case would be suitable for public funding.
