Access to justice for prisoners – the views of our Prison Law team

Six of Doughty Street's expert prison law team write about the Ministry of Justice's announcement that the Government intends to cut legal aid for prisoners seeking to bring proceedings for judicial review of decisions relating to their treatment or their detention conditions. Edward Fitzgerald QC , Phillippa Kaufmann QC, Ruth Brander , Caoilfhionn Gallagher, Alison Gerry and Quincy Whitaker argue in an article published today that the proposals to cut legal aid for prisoners make neither financial nor constitutional sense. They demonstrate "an utter disregard for access to justice and the rule of law".
