European Court of Human Rights rules in favour of Abdullah Öcalan (represented by Mark Muller QC) v Turkey

In the case of Öcalan v. Turkey, the Court found that there had been a violation of Article 3 of the Convention on account of the conditions of the applicant’s detention up to 17 November 2009, and in view of his sentence to life imprisonment without prospect of release. The applicant, who is the founder of the PKK (Kurdistan Workers Party), is currently in prison on the island of İmralı (Turkey).
