Limitation success in ‘historic’ abuse case

Following a five day hearing to disapply the relevant limitation period, Aswini Weereratne has won the right for George Blackstock to pursue his claim for damages for assault against Stoke City Football Club and Peter Fox.  Mr Blackstock was an apprentice footballer at Stoke City in the mid 1980s when he alleges he was assaulted by Mr Fox, then goal keeper, in a ritual known as 'the glove' used to punish apprentices for minor infringements of their duties.  The case has now been transferred to the High Court and will be listed for a trial in 2015.  Ms Weereratne was instructed by Simon Richardson at the Smith Partnership, Derby.
