The Gurkha Justice Campaign has won the annual Liberty/JUSTICE Human Rights Award for 2009 at a ceremony in London on 10th December 2009. The award was collected by a group of Gurkhas featuring two of the world's seven surviving Victoria Cross holders and their legal team including Doughty Street barristers Edward Fitzgerald QC and Mark Henderson and their instructing solicitors Howe & Co (whose senior partner Martin Howe was also nominated as human rights lawyer of the year for the Gurkha campaign).
The judges described it as "a remarkable victory for human rights" which "led to retired British Army Gurkhas being accorded due respect and protection through the provision of settlement rights, education rights and health care in the UK." The winners were said to "provide inspiring examples of what human rights can do to help those who would otherwise be powerless and oppressed."
