Doughty Street Chambers is delighted to announce that, with effect from 1 February 2010, Tim Otty QC will be a member of Chambers.
Tim is an acknowledged expert in public law, human rights law, commercial law and public international law and will be working principally from the Public Law, International law, Extradition and Media teams within Chambers.
He has a high profile practice and in 2009 he appeared before the House of Lords, the Privy Council and the Grand Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights in landmark cases such as Secretary of State for the Home Department v AF No. 3, Re Chief Justice of Gibraltar and Carson and Others v UK as well as acting as Counsel to a public inquiry in the Cayman Islands. Between 2004 and 2008 he acted as amicus curiae in three cases relating to the Guantanamo Bay detentions before the United States Supreme Court and, since 1994, he has appeared in over forty cases before the European Court of Human Rights. His media related commercial law experience embraces a series of important disputes relating to ownership of art and valuable manuscripts and to cable and satellite television distribution agreements.
In 2008 Tim was awarded the Liberty/Justice Human Rights Lawyer of the Year Award and in 2006 he won the Chambers and Partners Pro Bono Award. He was the youngest member of the Bar to be appointed silk in 2006 and is currently a visiting fellow at Mansfield College Oxford and the Vice Chair of the Bar of England and Wales Human Rights Committee.
