Regulatory and Financial Crime

Practice Summary

Doughty Street Chambers is well known for its commitment to human rights and civil liberties, which extends to our dedicated Business Crime Team where our members fiercely protect the right of our clients to a fair trial, whether they are an individual tax-payer or a FTSE Chief Executive.

We are instructed by individuals, as well as by companies and their directors and officers, to advise and appear as advocates in a wide range of white collar crime and other fraud cases.  Many of our team are cited by Chambers & Partners and by The Legal 500 as leaders in their field.

We are regularly instructed in major banking, market abuse, insider dealing and cartel cases (e.g. Euribor, FX, and others), bribery and corruption matters, mortgage and insurance frauds, tax and VAT frauds, fraudulent trading schemes, money laundering and more.

We have particular experience of Proceeds of Crime litigation including restraint proceedings, criminal confiscation, and civil recovery.  Our members author the leading practitioner textbook Blackstone’s Guide to POCA 2002.

As well as appearing in court for clients, we are also instructed to advise pre-charge, and to advise on potential or vicarious criminal liability arising from corporate activity such as company acquisitions.

We also represent companies or their directors in regulatory crime prosecutions (such as environmental notices, health and safety proceedings, and trading standards issues), and can assist with implementing remedial work such as updating or drafting policies, and cascading those throughout an organisation with training.

The Business Crime Team is part of a set which is also well known for its expertise in civil law, Administrative and Public Law, and international law.  As a result, many of our practitioners have both criminal and civil experience.  We have appeared in most of the leading cases involving the challenging of search warrants and other orders in the High Court, and are experienced in private prosecutions (including decisions not to prosecute), in civil litigation under the Proceeds of Crime Act, in terrorism financing, and in representing financial services professionals before their regulator (both in the UK and the Middle East).  We also have experience of export control and sanctions work (US, EU, and UK).

Our practice management team will be pleased to let you know more about our Business Crime experience, and to introduce you to our specialist counsel and client-focused approach.  They can also let you know about our extensive bespoke client training programme.  Please call Maurice MacSweeney, our Business Development Director (T: 020 7400 8906 or E: or speak to our criminal clerks, led by Tom Street, on our dedicated number, 020 7400 9088, or by emailing
