AI in the Legal Landscape: Opportunities, Risks, and Best Practices

Monday 12 May 2025, 17:30 – 19:15, followed by a drinks reception

This event aims to provide solicitors and other legal professionals with insights into the latest developments in AI regulation and case law, examine the practicalities of applying AI in legal practice, and foster discussion on emerging opportunities.

The panel will include Associate and world-leading expert on the governance of AI, Kay Firth-Butterfield; DSC barristers Graham Denholm, and Matthew Lee, author of the AI Legal blog, Natural and Artificial Law and external expert William Dunning of Simmons & Simmons.

Key Talking Points

1. The EU AI Act

Legislative Overview: A brief summary of the aims of the EU AI Act (e.g., promoting safe and trustworthy AI, introducing a risk-based framework, obligations for AI providers), highlighting proposed timelines and stages of legislative approval.

Risk-Based Categories: The classification of AI systems—prohibited, high-risk, and limited-risk.

Opportunities for Chambers:  New Legal Services: Growth in AI compliance, advisory, and litigation; Cross-Border Work: International instructions where the EU AI Act extends to providers outside the EU under certain conditions.

2. Where are the challenges? Where is AI going to feature in litigation across DSC’s core areas of practice?

3. Review of cases where AI has featured: How is AI being observed in reported cases and what lessons can be learned.

The panel discussion will be followed by a Q&A session with the audience.
