Fixed Term Tenancy – Crime

Doughty Street Chambers is a multi-disciplinary set of barristers with a truly national and international reputation for excellence, particularly for work involving issues of human rights and civil liberties.  The Crime Team is the largest practice group in Chambers, working from our offices in London, Manchester and The Hague, comprising around 60 practitioners including over 20 QCs.  As well as advising on and appearing in cases involving the full spectrum of offences in the Crown and Magistrates’ Courts, its members also specialise in financial crime, regulatory work involving financial, legal and healthcare professionals, appeals to the Court of Appeal, Supreme Court, and European Court of Human Rights, judicial review claims arising from criminal issues, extradition, and international crime before the ICC and ad hoc tribunals, and more.

In order to ensure we can continue to provide our clients with the highest level of service, the Crime Team is now seeking to recruit a Fixed-Term Tenant to work from our London office.  Applicants will usually have at least 6 to 12 months’ experience of courtroom advocacy and may either already be a very junior tenant at another set, or may be in the process of applying for third-six pupillages. 

Upon successful completion of a 6-month probationary period, you will be given a fixed term tenancy lasting a further 18 months.  During this time you can expect to be in court every day to develop your practice.   Fixed Term Tenants are not distinguished from full members when presented to our clients and our FTT programme is designed to ensure young barristers are given as much support, mentoring and development as possible at the start of their careers.  In addition, FTTs benefit from favourable rent arrangements.  Our FTTs have an opportunity to draw on hands-on guidance from senior members and the clerks in order to develop a sustainable and well-funded practice before they take on the additional responsibilities and financial commitments of full tenancy.
