Economic Crime Unit Practice Held to be an Abuse of Power

In the entirely novel case of R (Merida Oil Traders) & Others v Central Criminal Court & Others, Rupert Bowers QC has halted the unlawful practice of the City of London Police of asking financial institutions to create cheques via production orders so they may then be seized using the summary cash seizure provisions and frozen in the Magistrates' Court. The case will be of importance to all financial institutions and those holding funds for others under a fiduciary or contractual duty.
