Poppi Worthington: publication and reporting

Following a legal challenge by media organisations, and rulings by the High Court and Court of Appeal, the High Court has today published details about the death of 13-month-old Poppi Worthington in December 2012.  The details are contained in a fact-finding judgment of Mr Justice Peter Jackson dating from March 2014, which has now been published with some redactions.  He ruled earlier this month that there is a very strong public interest in allowing publication of parts of the judgment now, and letting the media report details of the "troubling circumstances" of the baby's death.

A hearing to review medical evidence started today.  The courts have permitted the media to report daily on these proceedings, a highly unusual step in a fact-finding hearing in care proceedings.

Caoilfhionn Gallagher, instructed by Oliver Murphy at RPC, acted for 8 media organisations in this case.

The 8 media organisations are Associated Newpapers Ltd, The BBC, CN Group, Guardian News and Media Ltd, Independent Print Ltd, the Press Association, Telegraph Media Group and Times Newspapers Ltd.
