Doughty Street Chambers makes pledge to confront racism in our society and in our own lives

We stand with black and minority communities everywhere in condemning the racist and unlawful killing of George Floyd, and the institutional racism and wider systems of entrenched inequality in the US, the UK  and across the world. Doughty Street Chambers has a proud history of fighting the origins and  the manifestations of abusive power. We are proud of our history, our members and all we achieve or try to achieve in challenging racism and the abuse of police power. Yet we realise we should not sit on our laurels. “Human rights lawyer” does not provide immunity from the pernicious reaches of structural racism, in fact in some instances it provides a cover.  We work to address discrimination in our professional lives but acknowledge that our everyday lifestyle choices and priorities are no less important. We pledge to confront racism in our society and in our own lives; we make this pledge to do what we can because we must.  #BlackLivesMatter
