Matthew has significant experience of high-value clinical negligence and personal injury claims, as well as inquests following deaths in clinical settings. Many of his cases involves issues of capacity and consent to medical treatment. Very recent examples include: (1) representing a family in a three-week Article 2 jury inquest, where the deceased was initially detained by the police under s.136 of the Mental Health Act, and then admitted to an inpatient mental health ward under s.2 of the MHA, where he tragically killed himself; and (2) representing a young man with severe learning disability and an autistic spectrum disorder in a claim for false imprisonment where he was detained by the local authority for a period of nearly four years without any lawful authority.
