In Memoriam: Paula Sparks

It is with profound sadness that we mark the passing of our dear friend and colleague Paula Sparks, who died peacefully on 30 May 2025. She confronted a diagnosis of motor neurone disease with her characteristic positivity.
Paula spent 23 years in a distinguished legal career at Doughty Street Chambers, following pupillage here, and at Garden Court Chambers. She was a respected barrister in clinical negligence, inquests, and public law. Her work was marked by a fierce commitment to justice, particularly for victims of medical negligence and combatting institutional failings. She will always be remembered as an extraordinarily dedicated lawyer, fiercely focused on her clients’ needs.
Paula stepped back from her successful practice to focus on her main passion, animal law. She was a founding force behind the UK Centre for Animal Law (A-LAW), where she continued to serve as chairperson. Her leadership helped shape A-LAW into an essential voice for the protection of animals through law.
Paula was a remarkable person and will be remembered not only for her formidable intellect and tenacious advocacy but also for her boundless compassion and humility.
Colleagues and friends at Doughty Street remember Paula as ”a most beautiful person”, “a complete inspiration and amazing friend to everyone who knew her”, “a positive spirit, radiating kindness”, “quietly brilliant, quirky and deeply principled”.
Paula is survived by her husband, Ed, two daughters, her sister and parents. To them, and to all who knew her, we extend our deepest sympathies.
