Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe freed

Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe has been freed by Iran after 6 years of arbitrary detention.

Nazanin’s husband, Richard Ratcliffe, has tirelessly campaigned for her release, assisted by human rights NGO, Redress.

Over the course of his 6-year campaign, and with assistance from Redress, Richard has sought relief from the United Nations Special Procedures and the UK Government. In April 2016 the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention found that Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe’s detention was arbitrary. In March 2019, the UK Government announced that it would grant Nazanin diplomatic protection. A second complaint to the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, that addressed Nazanin’s ongoing ill treatment, her second conviction based on groundless charges, and Iran’s practice of arbitrarily detaining dual and foreign nationals for diplomatic leverage, was filed in August 2021.

More information about the case and the legal team’s work can be found here, here, and here.

Professor John Dugard, Tatyana Eatwell and Tayyiba Bajwa, Doughty Street Chambers, and Alison Macdonald QC, Essex Court Chambers act in the case, instructed by Redress.
