Ryan Corbett Freed After 894 Days in Unlawful Taliban Custody
Ryan Corbett, illegally detained by the Taliban for 894 days, has been released from custody in a deal that was struck in the final hours of President Biden’s term in office. The deal follows almost two years of negotiations.
Ryan’s family has released a statement expressing their overwhelming gratitude, and the immense privilege of their forthcoming reunion with Ryan, particularly given the many other families who are still waiting for their loved ones to return, including those still held by the Taliban.
Ryan Corbett’s family was represented by Doughty Street International’s Kate Gibson and Nikila Kaushik, in a legal team headed by Ryan Fayhee of Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP in Washington DC. In April 2024, the team filed petitions in front of the UN Working Group for Arbitrary Detention, and the UN Special Rapporteur on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, resulting in a statement from the UN Special Rapporteur in June 2024 recognising that without adequate medical care Ryan was at risk of irreparable harm or death.
