This seminar will look at the options for accommodation and support for families seeking asylum (including those whose claims have been refused but who remain in the UK). Topics to be covered include:

  • An overview of asylum support arrangements under the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999 (section 95 and section 4(2)).
  • Provision for mixed households and the decision in MK.
  • Local authority obligations under Children Act 1989, s. 17 - impact of Clue on current and former asylum seekers .
  • Community care obligations to families with care needs.
  • The application of the exclusions from support in Sch 3 of the Nationality, Immigration and Asylum Act 2002.
