Asma Nizami, Nancy Williams and Violet Smart join Doughty Street Chambers

Doughty Street Chambers is delighted to welcome three new members Asma Nizami and Nancy Williams who join our Court of Protection Team and Violet Smart who joins our Criminal Law Team.

Asma is an experienced human rights practitioner with specialisms in mental capacity law, immigration and asylum and education law. She has a particular interest in the human rights of vulnerable clients. Asma is ranked in the 2023 edition of the Legal 500 directory as a ‘Leading Junior’ in the fields of Court of Protection/Community Care and Immigration.

Nancy has a wide ranging practice that includes children law, court of protection, Inquests and International Human Rights.

Prior to joining the bar, Nancy developed extensive international experience.  She worked at the International Court of Arbitration in Paris in the common law team, the United Nations Development Programme, Access to Justice Programme in Sierra Leone, Bingham Centre for the Rule of Law and in the international and group claims department of the leading human rights law firm Leigh Day where she was involved in large group actions.  She maintains an international element to her work through her Pro Bono work.

Violet has a broad criminal practice, representing clients in the full range of offences, including drug supply, violence, driving and sexual offences. She is also experienced in representing youths in serious crime, including on multi-handed and joint enterprise bases, and has a track record of successful diversion for clients in the youth courts. She has undertaken vulnerable witness training and is often sought after to represent clients with learning and mental health difficulties and autism.
