Neglect contributes to death at HMP Nottingham

A jury at Nottingham Coroner's Court has found that gross failure to provide basic medical attention contributed to the death of Alex Braund at HMP Nottingham on 10.3.2020.

Expert evidence at the hearing confirmed that Alex (25) would have survived (rather than died of pneumonia) if he had received timely and adequate medical attention.

During questioning at the inquest a nurse for the first time admitted serious incompetence, and that she had lied to conceal her neglect of duty towards Alex.  HM Area Coroner Laurinda Bower has reported her to the Nursing and Midwifery Council, and to Nottinghamshire Police for an investigation into perjury and falsification of medical notes.

A prison officer is to be considered for disciplinary action.

Nick Stanage represented the family, instructed by Jo Eggleton of Deighton Pierce Glynn, whose press release is here.
