Katy is ranked as one of the leading silks in both Chambers & Partners and Legal 500 directories.  Highly regarded for her courtroom skill and strategic advice, Katy specialises in defending those accused of the most serious allegations, including homicide, sexual offending, child abuse and financial crime.  She has extensive experience representing vulnerable clients and professionals whose reputations are at risk.  She provides pre-charge advice and proactively pursues routes to avoid prosecution and has an established second-opinion criminal appellate practice.

Katy has particular expertise challenging expert witnesses. Katy is the editor of Mason’s Forensic Medicine and the Law, an Assistant Coroner and a Mental Health Tribunal Judge.  These appointments give her particular insight when advising her clients in criminal and inquests cases.

Sexual Crimes

Katy is extremely experienced in sexual crime litigation including historic, gang-related, and sex ring allegations. She is frequently instructed on behalf of private clients facing allegations of a devastating nature. 

Domestic abuse and Offences Against Children

Katy has a national reputation in cases involving violence against young children and babies, and in allegations of homicide arising from domestic abuse. She is now one of the most sought-after advocates in this field, notably successfully defending in the high profile case of R v Trybus, one of the first trials for manslaughter arising from a suicide allegedly precipitated by domestic violence.

Serious Violence

Katy is expert in matters involving vulnerable witnesses or complex expert evidence, across a breadth of serious violence cases including gang-related murders, homicide by defendants suffering from psychosis, mercy killings, deaths in custody and fatal arson attacks.

She is also regularly instructed by professionals accused of fatal or serious failings in the course of their duties, including prison officers, nurses and teachers.

Katy also has experience of terrorism prosecutions, having represented both perpetrators and those accused of funding serious terrorism.

Financial Crime and Drugs

Katy’s early training in international business and banking gives her particular insight into complex financial crime. She is a strong choice for matters involving fraud, money laundering, funding terrorism and large-scale drugs conspiracies.

Criminal Appeals

Katy has extensive experience with conviction and sentence appeals from the Court of Appeal to the European Court of Human Rights, including submissions to the Criminal Cases Review Commission. She is frequently instructed by leading appeal firms for second opinion advice in serious and complex cases. 

Inquests

Katy’s expertise in inquests combines impeccable advocacy and exceptional judgment with the practical insight gained from her work as an Assistant Coroner. She is highly experienced in inquest procedure and as an advocate and investigations, into deaths in custody, in hospitals and other occupational settings. She has acted in inquests concerning a wide range of matters which include construction-site deaths, psychiatric hospital and prison deaths, suspected suicides and police-pursuit road traffic collisions.
