The Bands:

The Exelixis band was formed to explore the evolution of Greek Laika music (the people’s music)from the early rebetiko songs of the "down and outs" in the early 1800s to the music of the great composers, Theodorakis, Hatzidakis, Xarchakos . The band performs in both Greek and Turkish, representing the breadth of influence of this musical tradition.

Suna Alan is a Kurdish Alevi singer based in London. She grew up in traditional Kurdish dengbêj (*bard) music and a rich cosmopolitan cultural environment in Izmir, Turkey. Although her main focus remains Kurdish folk songs, her repertoire also includes Armenian, Greek, Sephardic and Turkish songs. She will be playing with her all-female ensemble "Suna Alan & Ethno Voices Project" http://www.sunaalan.net/

This event is hosted by Doughty Street Chambers, an internationally renowed set of barristers chambers dedicated to the promotion of civil liberties and human rights through law.
