HEATHER WILLIAMS QC APPOINTED AS DEPUTY HIGH COURT JUDGE

Doughty Street is extremely proud of Heather Williams QC who, it was announced today, has been appointed as a Deputy High Court Judge.

Her new view from the High Court bench will be informed by her extensive and broad work in cases involving issues of civil liberties, human rights, employment law, and major inquests and inquiries.  Alongside her part-time judicial commitments she will maintain her busy practice, which in recent years has seen her involved in significant cases such as Hallam v The Secretary of State for Justice in the Supreme Court (seeking redress for victims of miscarriages of justice), the Hillsborough Inquests and related civil claims for misfeasance in public office, important right to protest appeals, and in journalist Miriam O’Reilly’s discrimination claim against the BBC.   

Heather already has extensive sitting experience, having been appointed as an Employment Judge in 2005, an Assistant Coroner in 2016, and as a Recorder earlier this year.  She also teaches advocacy to the next generation of barristers at Gray’s Inn, where she is a Bencher.  She also works as a mediator.  It is testament to her many skills that she fits all of this in alongside contributing hugely to the life of Chambers, where she leads our Employment team and Actions Against the Police team (which, in no small part down to her skilful leadership, has enjoyed for many years its status as the only set ranked in Band 1 by the leading industry directories in this practice area).
