Liridon Saliuka: Jury finds significant and multiple failings at HMP Belmarsh contributed to death

Coroner writes a prevention of future deaths report regarding treatment of disabled prisoners.

Mr Saliuka was on remand at HMP Belmarsh when he committed suicide. He was disabled following a serious car accident. On 3 November 2022 the jury at the inquest into his death concluded that discrimination, including multiple and significant failings by the relevant authorities to respond to his disabilities, contributed to Mr Saliuka’s deteriorating mental state and his decision to take his own life. The Coroner accepted that he had a duty to send a Prevention of Future of Deaths Report highlighting the lack of any training of prison staff in disability and problem in the sharing of information in relation to disabled prisoners. Mr Saliuka’s family was represented by Jo Eggleton at Deighton Pierce Glynn and Jamie Burton KC.
