Lord Nazir Ahmed and his brothers’ trial stopped as an abuse of process after Prosecution “sabotaged” trial

Katy Thorne QC, instructed by Tayab Ali of Bindmans represented Mohammed Farouq, Lord Ahmed’s older brother, who was accused of multiple historic sexual offences.

The Recorder of Sheffield discharged the jury on 22nd February 2021 and on Monday 8th March 2021 put a permanent stay on the proceedings due to huge investigation and disclosure failures. The judge described himself as “shocked and appalled” by the prosecution’s conduct and said “this disgraceful situation has sabotaged this trial and caused it to abort. I do not use this adjective lightly.”

The allegations against the three brothers dated back almost 50 years, were made by a male and a female complainant.  Katy Thorne QC and Tayab Ali of Bindmans represented Mohammed Farouq, 70, who had previously been found unfit to plead and had been facing a trial of the facts.
