Prince Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein joins The Elders

We are delighted to share news that Prince Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, member of our Academic Panel, has joined The Elders, the independent group of global leaders founded by Nelson Mandela who use their independence, collective experience and influence to work on projects seeking the furtherance of peace, justice and human rights worldwide.

Zeid has joined the group along with Ellen Johnson Sirleaf (Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, former President of Liberia and Africa’s first elected female Head of State), and Juan Manuel Santos (Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and former President of Colombia).

Announcing the news, Chair of The Elders Mary Robinson said “I am delighted to welcome three such esteemed new members to our group. Ellen, Juan Manuel and Zeid each bring valuable and distinctive perspectives on issues that are central to our work, from human rights and peacebuilding to gender equality and justice for all. I look forward to them playing critical roles in our current and future initiatives across the globe.”

Zeid, who joined us last year, was UN High Commissioner for Human Rights between 2014 and 2018, and prior to that played a central role in the establishment of the International Criminal Court.  On joining The Elders he said “In an age when poor leadership, injustice and suffering is rife, the Elders’ vision of a world where people live in peace and are conscious of their common humanity is essential. I am honoured to join this illustrious group and work with them for a better world.”
