Teacher Acquitted of Perverting the Course of Justice

Benjamin Newton KC, instructed by Leo Martin of Freemans Solicitors, represented TS, a teacher described as a man of ‘unwavering integrity’ by colleagues and as a ‘role model’ by former students. In December 2021 he was driving home at night when, through no fault on his part, he ran over a pedestrian resulting in their death. Having called the emergency services, and performed CPR until the arrival of paramedics, he told police at the scene that the man had already been there upon his arrival. CCTV from nearby premises later showed that it was in fact his car that had been responsible and he was prosecuted for perverting the course of justice, but acquitted on the basis that he genuinely believed the account he had given.
