Career Profile

A founding member of Doughty Street Chambers, James recently celebrated his 50 distinguished years of practicing at the Bar. With vast experience in appellate and trial work throughout his career, James has appeared in some of the country’s highest profile criminal appeals and historic miscarriage of justice cases since the 1990s. His reputation as a leading trial and appellate lawyer in many of the most significant terrorist and murder cases in the first quarter of the 21st century places him amongst the country’s leading criminal advocates.

James sits as a part-time judge and now brings his experience to bear primarily in inquiries, appellate and advisory roles, whilst remaining available for instructions relating to specific or novel issues, with limited availability for court appearances in the Crown Court or for Criminal Appeals. He is an Accredited Mediator, and available to assist in the mediation of disputes involving civil, community and commercial matters, through his “Wood Works Mediation Practice” clerked through Doughty Street Chambers.

The case was the subject of widespread criticism and speculation within the science community (Read more here).

  • the overturning of the Firkins brothers’ convictions for a double murder in 2023 and their acquittal in 2024, after 20 years of work (with others) on their wrongful convictions, having appeared for Lee Firkins at his trial in 2005

  • the thwarted 2006 “Trans-Atlantic airlines bomb plot” – (Barot and others 2007-2010) two retrials over 3+ years concerning a UK-based terrorist cell plan to detonate homemade liquid explosives aboard multiple passenger planes between London, the US and Canada;
