Marc Weller is a leading expert in public international law. He is Professor of International Law and International Constitutional Studies in the University of Cambridge and the Director of the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law. He is also a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and a fully accredited mediator.

Professor Weller’s areas of expertise cover all aspects of public international law, including dispute and conflict settlement, statehood and recognition, immunities, territory, law of the sea, crimes and human and minority rights.

Professor Weller has served as legal advisor on issues of international law to governments and as consultant on international law to major international organizations, including the United Nations, the African Union and the Council of Europe. He served as Counsel in the International Court of Justice and as expert in domestic and international proceedings.

Professor Weller is also known for his role as legal advisor in complex, high-pressure international negotiations. He was legal advisor for Kosovo in the process that led to its independence in 2008, including the Rambouillet and Ahtisaari peace negotiations. He supported the pre-referendum negotiations on Sudan/South Sudan for the African Union, the peace negotiations and transition process in Yemen for the United Nations, and the international negotiations on the crisis in Darfur. He served as a legal advisor to the United Nations and League of Arab States Joint Special Envoy for Syria, Kofi Annan.

During the Period of the Arab Spring, Professor Weller served as a member of the United Nations Secretariat in New York. In the role of Senior Mediation Expert he developed considerable expertise in the design of legal transition processes for societies undergoing fundamental change. Moreover, he contributed to a string of high level initiatives in support of peace-making around the globe.

Professor Weller also served as Director of the European Centre for Minority Issues. In that role, he guided conflict resolution activities in Eastern and Central Europe, including Georgia, Moldova, (FRY) Macedonia, Kosovo, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. He advised on human and minority rights legislation and anti-discrimination issues in relation to several other states.

Professor Weller is the author, editor or co-editor of some 25 books in the area of international law. He holds doctorates in law, in international relations and in economic and social sciences. In addition to his legal qualifications, he has trained in negotiations at Harvard Law School and the John F Kennedy School of Government, he has qualified as a professional mediator and been appointed a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.
