Detention challenges after the Illegal Migration Act 2023 | Monday 15th April | 3pm

This webinar will examine the changes made to immigration detention powers under the IMA 2023, and will provide strategies on how their effects can be navigated, mitigated and challenged. Graham, Rosa and Finnian will:

  1. Analyse provisions of the Act affecting bail, judicial review and damages claims.
  2. Discuss strategies for dealing with these new provisions and considering ways in which they might be challenged.
  3. Consider the practicalities of getting such challenges off the ground, in terms of identifying test cases, gathering relevant evidence and navigating court procedures.

This webinar is aimed at solicitors, NGOs and other bodies supporting those who have been or may be detained under immigration powers.

Vulnerable adults in immigration detention | Tuesday 28th May | 3pm

Speakers: Leonie Hirst, Shu Shin Luh and Laura Profumo

This seminar will focus on the implementation of the Adults at Risk statutory framework for vulnerable adults in detention. It will reflect on the highly critical findings from the Brook House Inquiry Report, published in September 2023, in respect of the systemic failures of detention safeguards, and the extent to which lessons have been learned by the Home Office and its contractors. The seminar will also explore recent developments to the AAR policy landscape, as well as key case-law on mental capacity assessments within the detention context. Leonie, Shu Shin and Laura will discuss how to utilise such material within civil detention claims and challenges to detention under the Illegal Migration Act 2023, and to press for wider reform to the detention system.

This webinar is aimed at solicitors, NGOs and other bodies supporting those who have been or may be detained under immigration powers.
