INFANTICIDE: AN OUTLINE OF THE LEGAL LANDSCAPE AND DISCUSSION ON NEXT STEPS
Thursday, 12th September 2024 | 18:00 - 19:00 In person, followed by a drinks reception until 20:00
Doughty Street's crime team warmly invites you to 'Infanticide: An Outline of the Legal Landscape and Discussion on Next Steps', a seminar examining the legal landscape surrounding the Infanticide Act 1938. In particular, the seminar will address the difficulties in establishing the available defence and the increasing trend in prosecutions against women for crimes committed during the post-natal period.
The aim of the seminar is to inform and to bring together for discussion parties who work in this field, including academics, lawyers, mental health experts, and those providing social support to women, to assess whether the current legal framework is adequate.
The seminar will be chaired by Karlia Lykourgou, who will speak on trends in infanticide cases and findings from the 2024 Cambridge ProBono Project Report. Other speakers will include Dr Emma Milne from Durham University and Dr Karen Brennan from Essex University, who will provide an overview of the law of infanticide and common myths; Dr Rebecca Moore from the East London NHS Foundation Trust will cover pregnancy denial and post-natal disorders; Anna Ford from Shearman Bowen will discuss lessons for defence lawyers from recent cases, and Katy Thorne KC will be speaking about Paris Mayo and Constance Marten’s cases.
The speaker sessions will be followed by a Q&A.
If you are unable to attend this seminar in person, we are pleased to offer a remote participation option, kindly let us know your preference and we will provide you with the joining link.
