Harriet Johnson secures damages for protester following arrest

Harriet Johnson has secured substantial damages for her client who was unlawfully arrested during an animal rights protest in Wellingborough. Her client was taking part in a peaceful protest as part of a vegan activist group, part of which involved the display of images of animal slaughter.

CCTV footage showed Harriet’s client behaving calmly at all times. Nonetheless, after being observed by two police officers he was arrested on suspicion of a public order offence and conveyed to a nearby police station, although it was later decided that no charges should be brought.

Harriet was instructed by Vicky Richardson of Hudgells Solicitors to bring a civil action for unlawful arrest / false imprisonment. The defendant police force eventually agreed to settle the action and to pay significant damages to Harriet’s client.
