Hooded Men torture finding

The Court of Appeal in Northern Ireland has concluded that the treatment of the ‘Hooded Men’ would, if it occurred today, be properly characterised as torture.

It also upheld a decision of the High Court to quash the outcome of an investigation by the PSNI into the treatment of the men, so that a proper investigation in which the public can have confidence can proceed.

Adam Straw represents the Hooded Men, led by Hugh Southey QC, and alongside Blinne Ni Ghralaigh, instructed by Darragh Mackin of Phoenix Law.

Jude Bunting was instructed for Amnesty International, who intervened, along with Monye Anyadike-Danes QC and Gavin Booth of Phoenix Law.

The case was reported in The Times.
