Nasir Mehmood, Senior Vice President of the United Kingdom Chapter of the Pakistani Muslim League Nawaz (“PML-N”), secures judgment and injunction in libel and data protection claim against Hum Network UK Limited

In a hearing before Saini J, Nasir Mehmood, also known as Nasir Mehmood Butt, the senior vice President of the United Kingdom chapter of the PML-N party, secured judgment against Hum Network UK Limited (“HUM”) for a series of highly defamatory allegations made during the course of broadcasts in July and August 2019, on the HUM News channel.  Damages are to be assessed at a future hearing.

On 6 July 2019, during the course of its Breaking Point programme HUM broadcast allegations that Mr Butt was a multiple murderer and member of an illegal drug marketing network who left Pakistan in order to avoid prosecution for criminal offences.  Further, during the course of the 23 August 2019 edition of the programme, it was alleged that Mr Butt’s connections with ex-Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif prevented the further investigation and prosecution of Mr Mehmood in relation to allegations that he had committed murder.

In addition to granting Mr Mehmood judgment, Saini J also granted him an injunction preventing HUM from any repeat broadcast of the defamatory allegations.
