Probation failures to act on stalking by murderer contributed to the death of Janet Scott

On Friday 19th February, Nottingham Assistant Coroner, Jonathan Straw concluded "missed opportunities" to act made a significant contribution to the death of a mum-of-six.

Janet Scott was killed after Simon Mellors stabbed her, then deliberately drove into her with his car on 29th January 2018.  Mellors had been convicted of murdering his previous partner in 1999 and was on life licence at the time of Janet’s death. Before she died Janet had told his probation officer that she had ended their relationship and Mellors was stalking her.

Angela Patrick represented Janet’s sister and her husband, instructed by Matthew Gold of Matthew Gold Solicitors.  (Janet’s daughter Amelia was represented by InstaLaw and Stuart Withers of No. 5 Chambers.  Her son, Joshua was represented by Deighton Pierce Glynn.)
