‘Serious and inexcusable’: Public Inquiry finds that Police, CPS and social services failed to investigate Labour MP Greville Janner

Leicestershire Police, the CPS, and Leicestershire County Council failed properly to investigate allegations of child sexual abuse made against Labour MP Greville Janner.

The Independent Inquiry Into Child Sexual Abuse (‘IICSA’) has today published its report into failings by police, prosecutors and social services in response to allegations of child sexual abuse by the Labour MP, and later Lord, Greville Janner.

The Inquiry concluded that Leicestershire Police failed properly to investigate allegations against Lord Janner and that key witness statements were withheld from the CPS who themselves appeared reluctant to progress investigations.

The Inquiry concluded that some investigative failings were “serious and inexcusable”. There was a 'culture of deference'. Overall, “the complainants were failed”.

Nick Stanage, a specialist in public inquiries and claims against the police and CPS, instructed by Kim Harrison and Richard Scorer of Slater and Gordon LLP, represented 14 complainants

Richard Scorer said: "Had investigations been conducted properly, it is clear that Lord Janner could have been prosecuted in his lifetime. Sadly the clock cannot be rolled back and the criminal trial of Lord Janner which could and should have taken place will never be possible.”
