Tatyana Eatwell gives evidence to the COI on the Occupied Palestinian Territory

Friday 11 November 2022: Tatyana Eatwell will give evidence to the United Nations Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, on the circumstances surrounding the killing of journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, the use of lethal force against other journalists working in Palestine, and the steps taken by them to secure an independent and impartial investigation and accountability.

Tatyana will appear in her capacity as international counsel, together with Jennifer Robinson, for a coalition of organisations - the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate (PJS), the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and the International Centre of Justice for Palestinians (ICJP).

On 20 September 2022, a Communication was submitted to the International Criminal Court (“ICC”) by Bindmans LLP and Tatyana Eatwell and Jennifer Robinson of Doughty Street Chambers on behalf of Anton Abu Akleh, the brother of Shireen Abu Akleh, journalists Ali Samoudi and Shatha Hanaysha, with the support of the local journalist union, the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate (“PJS”), the International Federation of Journalists (“IFJ”), and the International Centre of Justice for Palestinians (“ICJP”) regarding the shooting and killing of Shireen Abu Akleh and shooting of Ali Samoudi whilst covering raids conducted by the Israeli forces in Jenin, Palestine.

This followed an earlier Communication, regarding the systematic targeting of Palestinian journalists by Israel, submitted on 19 April 2022 to the ICC by the same legal team on behalf of four journalists who were either maimed or killed – Muath Amarneh, Nedal Eshtayeh, Ahmad Abu Hussein and Yaser Murtaja, or their bereaved families - and by occupants of the Al-Sousi, the Al-Shorouk, and the Al-Jalaa Towers in Gaza (which housed Palestinian and international media organisations, and civilian residences), with the support of the PJS, IFJ, and the ICJP.

Further information on the public hearings held by the UN Commission of Inquiry can be found here and here.

Tatyana Eatwell and Jennifer Robinson act as International Legal Counsel for PJS, IFJ and ICJP, instructed by Bindmans LLP.
