XT – Polish request discharged

On 22 January 2026, XT - a treatment resistant schizophrenic - was discharged from a Polish extradition request.

XT was sought by Poland for historic offences of assault and theft. In the UK, however, he had been convicted of offences committed during a severe psychotic episode and sentenced to a lifelong Hospital and Restriction Order in 2013. He was only conditionally discharged into the community in 2025.

Extradition was robustly opposed on multiple grounds, including passage of time, XT’s profound and enduring mental illness, conviction in absentia, and breaches of his human rights. The case raised complex and novel questions about the recognition in Poland of UK Hospital Orders, and whether the highly specialised psychiatric treatment and community support on which XT depended could be safely provided abroad. A number of experts provided evidence including psychiatric and psychological assessments, addressing both XT’s mental state and the risks posed by any disruption to his care - to both himself and others.

XT was represented by Mary Westcott and Amelia Nice instructed by Renata Pinter.
