Children's Rights Group Webinar: The rights of unaccompanied asylum-seeking children in the UK
Monday 27 February 2023 | 15:30 - 17:00
Doughty Street Chambers’ Children's Rights Group are delighted to invite you to a webinar covering legal and policy developments concerning the rights of unaccompanied asylum-seeking children in the UK.
Our expert panelists will address current legal and policy developments affecting the rights of unaccompanied migrant children, including the use of hotels to house them, diverting them from statutory local authority care, and the Home Secretary’s recent announcement of new legislation that would transfer corporate parenting responsibilities from local authorities to the Home Office. These changes mark an erosion of child protection for unaccompanied migrant children and, if made permanent, will create a two-tier child care system which treats unaccompanied migrant children differently because of their immigration status.
In partnership with The Doughty Street Anti-Trafficking Team.
The webinar will be chaired by Professor Aoife Nolan, Co-Head of Doughty Street's Children's Rights Group, and speakers will include:
-
Siobhán Mullally, Special Rapporteur on trafficking in persons, especially in women and children
-
Carolyne Willow, Chief Executive of Article 39
-
Laura Duran, Head of Policy at ECPAT
-
Shu Shin Luh, Co-Head of Doughty Street's Children's Rights Group
-
Catherine Meredith, Doughty Street Chambers
