This seminar will be a thorough analysis of recent developments in the law on articles 2 and 3 ECHR, and an analysis of hot topics for the future. It is aimed at practitioners representing claimants in public law cases, civil actions, inquests and inquiries. The topics will include these: 

  • Regulatory and systemic failure: Windrush, benefit cuts, conditions of detention, and Grenfell

  • Abortion, euthanasia and healthcare

  • Which bodies owe what duties? From schools to social services

  • G4S, private contractors, and vicarious liability

  • Historic mistreatment, including legacy cases in Northern Ireland

  • The protection of trafficking victims

  • The duty to investigate discrimination and the targeting of vulnerable groups

  • Mistreatment by the UK government abroad, and attacks here by a foreign state

  • Disciplinary or criminal proceedings, and vetting state agents

  • Tackling patterns of mistreatment
